What is it about?
Nick Carraway moves to Long Island in the summer of 1922 and soon finds himself drawn into the glamorous world of his mysterious neighbour, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is famous for his extravagant parties, but behind the music, champagne and crowds lies a very personal obsession: Daisy Buchanan, the woman he loved years before.

When Nick discovers that Daisy and Gatsby were once in love, he agrees to help them meet again. Their reunion soon turns into a secret affair, bringing old feelings back to the surface and setting in motion a series of events that will have devastating consequences.

Behind its parties, wealth and romance, The Great Gatsby is a story about desire, ambition, illusion and the impossibility of recreating the past.

The author and the novel
F. Scott Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby in 1925. Set during the Jazz Age of the 1920s, the novel captures a world of extraordinary wealth and excess while revealing the emptiness and inequalities beneath it.

Today, it is considered one of the defining American novels of the twentieth century and one of Fitzgerald's most enduring works.

Why you should read it?
Because beneath the glamour there is a surprisingly melancholic story. Gatsby's world of enormous parties and impossible dreams gradually reveals itself as an attempt to recover something that can never truly be recovered.

And because Fitzgerald manages to say a great deal about the American Dream without ever losing the elegance and atmosphere of the story.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the great voices of America’s so-called “Jazz Age.” His novels capture the glamour, excess, and fragility of the American Dream, with characters who pursue success, love, or wealth, only to discover the emptiness that can lie beneath it all. He combines elegance, romance, and a critical eye for ambition and appearances. His stories are filled with glamour and unforgettable parties, but also with melancholy and disillusionment. Perfect for readers looking for intense, sophisticated classics with that nostalgic quality that lingers in the mind long after the book has been closed.
